Armenia entry requirements depend on the passport you will travel on, not the language you speak or the country where you currently live. A German passport, an Indian passport with a UAE residence card, and an Indian passport without that card lead to different checks. A family travelling together may need more than one visa route.

Start with your travel document, then identify the visa or exemption that applies to it. The Armenian MFA visa checker asks for both citizenship and document type. Do that check separately for every person before buying a ticket that cannot be changed.

TL;DR

  • Visa-free entry by nationality and entry using a foreign residence permit are different routes. Use the MFA’s visa-free passport list, agreement list and current exemption conditions, rather than assuming that living in Europe is enough.
  • A temporary scheme covers nationals of 111 listed countries from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027, when they hold a qualifying foreign residence permit valid for at least six months on arrival. The official PDF also requires a physical card or passport sticker.
  • If you need a visa, the correct route may be an e-visa, an eligible border application or an invitation-based consular application. An e-visa website does not make every passport eligible for the same process.
  • Children need their own entry assessment and an accepted travel document. Evidence of parentage, consent and departure-country rules are separate questions.
  • This guide covers getting to and through the border. For the permitted length of a visit, day counts and longer residence, use the length-of-stay guide.

Checked on 22 October 2026. This is a researched editorial guide, without a named legal reviewer. It does not determine an individual admission decision. The examples assume ordinary foreign passports unless stated otherwise; Armenian dual nationals need a different assessment.

Which entry route fits your documents?

Choose the row that describes the document you will actually present. The table gives examples, not a complete country list or an approval for a particular traveller.

Entry decision examples based on the Armenian MFA lists and temporary-exemption PDF checked 22 October 2026. Every member of a family needs a separate assessment.

The bilateral list includes rows that apply only to diplomatic or service passports. Seeing your country’s name is not enough: read the document column. For instance, India’s row is for diplomatic passports only. That is a useful example of why a country list and a passport list cannot be treated as interchangeable.

Can your foreign residence permit make the trip visa-free?

Yes, if your nationality, issuing jurisdiction, permit format and validity meet the current temporary scheme. A visa for another country, a residence application receipt and a residence permit are different documents.

The MFA’s scheme document dated 30 June 2026 names the United States, EU member states, Schengen states, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman as qualifying issuers. It lists the eligible nationalities separately. The United Kingdom is not named as an issuing country in that document. A British passport is a different case from another nationality’s passport plus British residence.

Bring the permit as a physical card or a sticker in the passport. The published conditions describe identifying information in Latin script: the document title, name, surname, nationality, date of birth and validity dates in the Gregorian calendar. A phone image alone does not meet the stated physical-format requirement.

What does “six months remaining” mean in practice?

Take a hypothetical arrival on 22 October 2026. A qualifying residence card expiring on 31 May 2027 clears the six-month validity test. A card expiring on 31 March 2027 does not. Those examples apply only to that one test; the nationality, issuer, format and other conditions must also fit.

Now suppose the card is being renewed and you hold only an online renewal confirmation. Do not substitute that confirmation for the physical document described by the scheme. Resolve the entry route before travelling, either through another applicable exemption or the visa process for your passport.

The scheme has a stated end date. It is not a permanent right to enter indefinitely, and the end date is not automatically your personal last day of stay. That second question belongs in the stay-duration guide.

What if you need an Armenian visa?

Use the official route that fits your nationality and document. Start at the MFA checker and follow its link to evisa.mfa.am if electronic application is appropriate. The invitation-only list is a separate branch, with applications through Armenian diplomatic or consular offices when no exception applies.

Prepare the details requested by the official entry-visa form: passport and citizenship information, your address during the Armenian visit, purpose, intended arrival and departure, and any inviting person or organisation. It also asks about other citizenships or residence permits. Use consistent answers across the application, ticket and supporting documents.

A useful sequence is:

  1. Confirm the application channel. Do this for your passport type, including whether an invitation is required.
  2. Prepare the travel-document details and visit information. Keep the intended address and the host’s contact available if relevant.
  3. Submit through the official channel and retain the reference. A saved draft or payment receipt is not an issued visa.
  4. Allow time for the decision. The e-visa terms describe normal processing as three working days, counted from the next business day after submission. Requests for extra documents can delay it.
  5. Read the issued visa before departure. Check the passport number, permitted entries, dates and length of stay. Carry an accessible copy with the passport used in the application.

For an application submitted on a Friday, a weekend is not three working days. Public holidays and requests for further information can affect the timetable too. Do not build a non-refundable flight around an assumption that payment produces instant approval.

The 2026 consular fee schedule lists a visitor visa for up to 21 days at 3,000 AMD and one for up to 120 days at 15,000 AMD. Those are published consular fees, not a promise that either option is available to every passport through every channel. The e-visa terms also state that the visa fee is non-refundable.

How long must your passport remain valid?

There is no useful universal answer such as “everyone needs another six months” in the sources reviewed for this guide. Armenian law starts with a valid recognised travel document, while passport-specific guidance and the rest of your journey can add conditions.

For example, GOV.UK’s advice for a full British-citizen passport says it must be valid for the duration of the stay. The US travel guidance similarly discusses validity on entry and departure for US travellers. Neither statement is a rule for every nationality or transit country.

Do not confuse passport validity with the six months remaining on a foreign residence permit required by the temporary exemption. A valid passport cannot fix a residence card that fails that test, and a long-valid residence card cannot fix an expired passport.

If you use a refugee travel document, emergency document or another non-ordinary document, select that document type in the official enquiry. Rules for an ordinary passport should not be copied onto it. If a passport was reported lost, later finding the booklet does not establish that it is valid again.

What should a family prepare for children?

Assess the child’s citizenship and travel document separately from the accompanying adult’s. Armenian law, Article 6, allows foreign minors to enter with parents, one parent, another legal representative or an attendant, and describes certain unaccompanied arrivals to a parent, representative or receiving organisation. That is not a worldwide rule for permission to leave the country of departure.

Build the child’s document folder around the actual family situation:

  • An accepted travel document and any visa or exemption needed for that child.
  • A birth certificate or other evidence connecting the child to the accompanying parent or representative.
  • Consent, custody or guardianship evidence required for that route and situation.
  • The carrier’s requirements if the child travels without a parent or with an unaccompanied-minor service.

The US guidance specifically advises carrying birth or legal-relationship evidence and says a minor travelling with only one parent needs a consent letter or proof of sole custody. We retain that advice for its US audience rather than turning it into one universal notarisation rule for every family.

Mixed-family example: one parent has a German passport; the other and their child have Indian passports. The German parent’s exemption does not answer the other two cases. If the second parent relies on a UAE residence card, assess whether the child has their own qualifying basis too. Being on the same booking does not transfer an exemption from one passenger to another.

For a custody dispute or uncertainty over a child’s citizenship, resolve the documents with the relevant authorities before departure. A generic packing checklist cannot settle those questions.

Does a connection or land journey change the preparation?

Yes. Armenia’s admission rules cover the Armenian border, while transit and departure rules belong to the other countries on the route. A document accepted for a direct flight may not settle an itinerary involving another country’s border.

Compare these two situations. With baggage checked through and no border crossing during a connection, you need the airport-transit requirements for your nationality and document. With separate tickets that require collecting baggage landside, you also need the right to enter that connecting country. Confirm which situation your booking creates before choosing the visa route.

The Armenia Travel route overview identifies land access through Georgia and Iran and states that the land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed. That is a route-planning observation checked on the date above, not a recommendation to travel through any particular border region. Operational conditions and the other country’s entry rules still matter.

For a direct flight, the practical folder is usually simpler: the travel document, issued visa or evidence of the relevant exemption, and supporting family documents when applicable. Keep the accommodation address and host contact accessible. This is preparation advice; it does not assert that every visa-free visitor must hold a paid hotel booking or return ticket under one blanket Armenian rule.

What if you also have Armenian citizenship?

Do not assume that presenting a foreign passport makes you a foreign visitor. The US Department of State’s dual-national guidance states that US-Armenian dual nationals must enter and depart on Armenian passports. It also warns that Armenia may consider some people citizens even when they think of the trip as a visit on their US passport.

If that may describe you or your child, confirm the Armenian document position with an Armenian consulate. Armenian citizenship and Armenian ancestry are different questions; neither should be guessed from a surname. This guide does not determine citizenship or military-service obligations.

Quick answers before booking

Is living in the EU enough for visa-free entry?

Not on its own. The temporary scheme checks nationality, the actual residence document, the issuing country, remaining validity and format. An ordinary visa or an application for residence is not automatically the required permit.

Does a UK residence permit qualify under the current temporary scheme?

The current MFA PDF does not name the UK among qualifying issuers. That differs from the nationality-based exemption for a full British-citizen passport. If British residence is your only proposed exemption, establish another valid route before travel.

Can everyone get a visa on arrival?

No. The MFA publishes an invitation-only consular branch and passport-specific visa information. Check your actual nationality and document instead of treating the airport as a universal fallback.

Does an adult’s visa cover their child?

Do not assume so. Establish the child’s own entry basis and accepted document, then add the relationship and accompanying-adult evidence. A family booking is not a family visa decision.

Is a visa approval the same as permission to stay indefinitely?

No. The issued document has its own conditions, and visa-free visitors have a separate stay rule. Continue with how long you can stay in Armenia once the entry route is clear.

Sources and the next decision

The links above lead to the Armenian MFA’s lists, application form and e-visa terms, the Law on Foreigners, and passport-specific UK and US guidance. Nationality examples are illustrative; they do not replace an individual decision by the authorities. We did not submit applications or test entry at a border.

Once your documents are settled, the next questions are how long you can remain, what monthly budget to plan and where to live in Yerevan. Those are separate decisions, with separate evidence.
