A local number becomes useful quickly after moving: your landlord calls, a courier needs directions, or a clinic asks how to reach you. The mobile operators in Armenia to compare here are Ucom, Team and Viva. Start with the package you will keep using after arrival, rather than choosing solely on the promise of unlimited data.
The ordinary prepaid plans selected below cost AMD 2,500 to AMD 3,200 per 30 days. These are specific offers, not an estimate of everyone's phone bill: Ucom, Team and Viva. AMD means Armenian dram. Prices and conditions were checked on 4 November 2026.
At a glance
- You have Wi-Fi at home: start with an ordinary prepaid phone package. Compare general data, calls and renewal rules before paying for unlimited data.
- Your phone is your main internet connection: look at the unlimited comparison, including speed limits and whether voice minutes are included.
- You need a connection for laptop work: choose a product that allows your intended use. A phone plan is not automatically a home broadband replacement.
- You want eSIM: a local operator's eSIM can provide a normal number, calls and SMS. Confirm phone compatibility before buying.
- You are moving with family: budget for the separate numbers people need. Sharing one person's internet does not give everyone a phone number.
Which prepaid plan makes sense if you have Wi-Fi at home?
Start with a standard prepaid bundle, then use the operator's app to see how much data you actually consume. Prepaid means you add credit before using the services; having money on the account and having an active bundle are separate things.
The table compares ordinary phone packages with the same validity period. It deliberately excludes home broadband bundles, regional offers and temporary sales discounts.
Table caption: Selected prepaid phone plans, AMD per 30 days. Each plan name links to its official conditions.| Operator and plan | Price, AMD | General data | Minutes | SMS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ucom Level Up+ 2500 | 2,500 | 20 GB | 1,000 | 500 |
| Viva START+ | 2,700 | 20 GB | 1,000 | 300 |
| Ucom Level Up+ 3000 | 3,000 | 30 GB | 1,500 | 300 |
| Team Be Free 3200 | 3,200 | 25 GB | 1,000 | 300 |
If the networks work equally well where you live, the smaller Ucom package has the lowest recurring price in this selection. The next Ucom option gives you more general data. Viva or Team can make more sense when their network suits your address or their included call destinations suit your contacts. This table is a shortlist, not a ranking of network quality.
Included minutes are not a worldwide calling allowance. Check the destination list, especially if you regularly call family abroad through the phone dialler. Ucom lists Armenian networks, the USA, Canada, India and eligible Russian numbers, with an exception for MTS prefixes. Team lists Armenian networks, the USA, Canada and specified Russian networks. Do not assume a number ported between networks will qualify just because of its current provider. The linked tariff conditions explain the rules.
Calls in messaging apps use internet rather than these voice minutes. Even an app advertised as unlimited may consume general data for some functions. Team excludes external websites, app downloads and updates, and technical or advertising traffic from its zero-rated app allowance. Compare general gigabytes first, then treat app benefits as extras. Team's app conditions.
What does unlimited mobile internet actually mean?
Unlimited can mean that internet remains available after a large allowance is used, but at a lower speed. It does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed data, included phone calls or permission to connect a household through a hotspot.
Table caption: Selected prepaid unlimited phone plans. All prices are for 30 days; the Team speed-limit wording needs the clarification below.| Plan | Price, AMD | Data and speed conditions | Voice calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ucom Level Up+ 4000 | 4,000 | After 200 GB, maximum speed becomes 512 kbps until the package ends | 500 included minutes to eligible destinations |
| Team Be Free 3500 | 3,500 | Russian terms specify possible reduction to 512 kbps after 200 GB; English footnote names a different plan | 200 included minutes to eligible destinations |
| Viva UNLIM START, prepaid | 3,000 | 200 GB at a maximum available speed of 50 Mbps, then 512 kbps | No voice-minute bundle in the base price |
A note on Team: its English Be Free 3500 page contains a speed-limit footnote naming Be Free 5000. The Armenian and Russian conditions explicitly name Be Free 3500 and state the threshold shown in the table. We have kept that discrepancy visible. If sustained speed is essential to your decision, ask Team to confirm the applicable conditions before paying; do not read the word unlimited as a speed guarantee.
Viva's maximum available speed is also not a measurement of what you will get in your apartment. We have not run network speed tests and do not use the advertised figure to declare a fastest operator.
For someone who calls mostly through messaging apps, Viva UNLIM START is worth considering as a phone internet package. If you also make regular voice calls, compare the total cost. Its published rates include AMD 15 per minute within Viva and AMD 35 per minute to other Armenian GSM networks; additional minute bundles are available. Viva UNLIM START rates.
Can you use a phone hotspot for work?
Do not buy a phone bundle on the assumption that it will support permanent laptop or household use. The permission to share data matters just as much as the allowance.
Ucom states that Level Up+ is for smartphones and that tethering may be limited. Team's unlimited conditions prohibit providing services to third parties, whether paid or free, including redistribution. That is not the same as an explicit ban on every connection to your own laptop, but it is not a promise of unrestricted household sharing either. Ucom's conditions, Team's conditions.
Viva's English START+ conditions say the named phone packages are not intended for modems, Wi-Fi devices or phones used as Wi-Fi devices, and restrictions may apply. This is a statement about the plans named there, not a claim that every Viva product has identical rules. Viva START+ conditions.
For a work backup, look for a product that explicitly supports a modem or router. Viva, for example, has a separate postpaid UNLIM START for internet devices. Despite the similar name, it is not the prepaid phone plan above. A promotional router may come with a commitment and an early termination cost, so compare the contract as well as the device offer.
Where should you buy a local SIM, and which documents do you need?
An operator service centre is a practical starting point for a newcomer. Bring your original passport and the phone you plan to use. Viva's joining instructions refer to a passport or ID card; its eSIM instructions specify a passport, while Team's SIM replacement instructions refer to an identity document. For a foreign newcomer, a passport is the sensible document to take rather than assuming that every foreign national ID will be accepted. Viva's joining instructions, Viva eSIM, Team eSIM.
A passport is a starting point, not a guarantee of approval. Team's general conditions allow it to request additional conditions or a deposit, or refuse an application, in certain circumstances, including some cases involving non-citizens. This does not mean every foreign applicant must pay a deposit.
These instructions do not establish a universal requirement to show an Armenian visa or residence permit for every prepaid purchase. Entry requirements depend on your circumstances and belong in the separate guide to entering Armenia. Ask about any additional document request in relation to the specific subscription you are buying.
Before paying, show the exact plan name from the table and ask for the total first payment. Make clear that you want the prepaid phone version. Similar names can appear in prepaid, postpaid and router offers.
- Have the SIM installed, or the eSIM profile downloaded, and wait for network registration.
- Wait for confirmation that the intended bundle is active. Adding credit alone is not proof of activation.
- Test mobile internet and an ordinary call before leaving.
- Save your number and open the operator's app to find the package balance and renewal date.
A local number is also useful as a contact when opening an Armenian bank account. It does not replace the bank's document checks or guarantee that every overseas service will send verification messages to it.
Should you choose a physical SIM or eSIM?
Either can provide a normal local mobile service. With eSIM, you download a profile to a compatible phone instead of inserting a plastic card. Viva confirms that its eSIM supports calls, SMS and internet just like a physical SIM. You need an internet connection to download the profile, so arrange access to Wi-Fi during setup. Viva's eSIM explanation.
Check your exact phone model and whether it can use another carrier. For an iPhone, Apple says to open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock. No SIM restrictions means it is unlocked; only the current carrier can unlock a locked device. Apple's instructions. A phone supporting eSIM is not, by itself, proof that it is unlocked.
Distinguish a new subscription from replacement of an existing SIM. Team lists AMD 200 for replacing a physical SIM with eSIM; Viva lists AMD 500 for an existing subscription. Viva says a new subscriber pays for the chosen tariff plan. Do not add a replacement charge to every new-number purchase. Team replacement fee, Viva replacement and new subscription rules.
Do not assume that online activation works for every passport. Team lists eSIM purchase through its app and service centres, but its detailed online eligibility page was unavailable when we checked. We could not verify whether the app accepts every foreign passport. For a first local number, a service centre and your identity document are the practical starting point.
Keep the QR code private. Viva warns that it provides access to your number, even after installation; it should not be posted online or shared in messages. This is particularly relevant when your local number becomes a recovery contact for other accounts. Viva's QR-code warning.
How much should you budget for yourself or your family?
Separate the first payment from the recurring bundle price. Ucom lists a one-off AMD 100 activation charge for a new prepaid Level Up+ SIM in addition to the package price, with an exception for pre-activated cards. For a standard new SIM with Level Up+ 2500, the first payment is therefore AMD 2,500 + AMD 100 = AMD 2,600. Ucom's activation charge.
The examples below are our calculations using that standard offer. They assume no plan changes, paid extras, special-number charges or price changes. They are not estimates of a typical household's consumption.
Table caption: Worked budgets using Ucom Level Up+ 2500 and its standard new-SIM activation charge, in AMD.| Situation | Calculation | Total, AMD |
|---|---|---|
| One new number and its first bundle | 2,500 + 100 | 2,600 |
| One number, three consecutive bundles covering 90 days | 3 × 2,500 + 100 | 7,600 |
| Three people, each with a new SIM and their own bundle | 3 × (2,500 + 100) | 7,800 |
| Renewal of those three bundles | 3 × 2,500 | 7,500 |
Also distinguish a 30-day bundle from a calendar-month bill. Continuous service across 365 days requires 13 bundle activations, counting the first one: the last activation happens before that period ends and continues beyond it. Under the same assumptions, that is 13 × AMD 2,500 + AMD 100 = AMD 32,600. This is our payment calculation, not an annual product offered by Ucom.
Add the relevant amount to your wider cost-of-living budget. Home broadband and buying a handset are separate expenses.
What happens when your data or credit runs out?
Do not assume the connection simply stops. The tariff may start charging per megabyte or activate an extra package. Your remaining credit, remaining general data and bundle expiry date are different balances to watch.
For Team Be Free 3200, the official table lists AMD 10 per MB after the included allowance is consumed during the active package period, and AMD 29 per MB with an inactive package. Keeping mobile data on can therefore spend credit outside your bundle. Team's out-of-bundle rates.
For Viva START+, while the 30-day bundle is active and after the main allowance runs out, an additional 500 MB package valid for 24 hours activates automatically if the balance is at least AMD 100. Automatic activation can be disabled with *212*0#. This is a START+ rule, not a statement about all Viva plans. Viva's extra-data conditions.
For Ucom Level Up+, the bundle renews automatically when sufficient credit is available. Without enough credit, standard tariff rates apply instead of the bundle allowances. Wait for the activation confirmation after topping up before starting a large download. Ucom's renewal conditions.
How should you compare coverage at your new home?
Shortlist plans by their published price and conditions, then check the network at the address that matters to you. We have no apartment-level measurements that justify naming a best operator for all of Yerevan or Armenia.
The official Ucom coverage map and Team coverage map are starting points. A map does not show reception in your particular room. If mobile data matters for work, test a call and a video call inside the apartment with Wi-Fi switched off, rather than relying on the signal outside the building.
When comparing Yerevan neighbourhoods, treat mobile reception as an address-specific check alongside noise and travel time. A district name is not a signal guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Which Armenian mobile operator is best after moving?
There is no universal winner without knowing your address and use. With home Wi-Fi, compare the ordinary packages first; for heavy phone use, compare the unlimited options and their restrictions. Choose between the suitable networks once you know they work where you need them.
Can a foreign newcomer get a local SIM?
Plan to visit a service centre with your original passport. The operator instructions linked above cover identification and joining the network, but online eSIM eligibility may be narrower. We could not verify which foreign passports the online application accepts.
Will a local eSIM have calls and SMS?
It can provide the same functions as a physical SIM, including a local phone number. The services you get still depend on your chosen tariff. Check compatibility and install the profile while you have internet access.
Can one unlimited plan connect the whole family?
Do not choose a phone plan on that promise: the operators publish restrictions on tethering or providing services to other people. Family members may also need independent phone numbers. For shared home access, compare a router-specific or fixed broadband service.
Does my number disappear when the bundle expires?
Bundle expiry and number cancellation are different events. The length of a data package does not establish how long an unused number will be retained. Before leaving Armenia for a long period, ask about the operator's number-retention rules separately.
Should I buy the most expensive plan immediately?
Not if you have Wi-Fi and do not yet know your mobile usage. Start with a suitable ordinary bundle and use the app to see whether its allowance is enough. Increase the package to solve a real need, rather than choosing it solely because it says unlimited.
Which official sources support this comparison?
The comparison uses the operators' own Ucom prepaid conditions, Team Be Free 3200, Team Be Free 3500, Viva START+ and Viva UNLIM START prepaid. Service-specific sources are linked where their conditions are discussed. Our budget totals are calculations from these published prices, not measured bills or personal experiences.
For a first local number, choose a bundle you understand, get it working before leaving the service centre, and watch its renewal date. The cheapest suitable package is useful; a low headline price that excludes your calls or intended use is less so.
